Ensuring your home is properly insulated is essential. Insulation makes a major difference in the energy efficiency of a building and how much it costs to cool and heat. It's also crucial for keeping the property fully comfortable during extreme heat and helping to manage indoor humidity. While there are various types of insulation, spray foam generally performs the best in terms of insulating value and longevity. In this spray foam guide, we'll take you through the process that the experts at iFOAM Insulation of Delray Beach use so that you know exactly what to expect from our home insulation process.

Pre-Installation Preparation: What You Need To Do

Before the day of the installation, you can take some steps to prepare the work area and ensure that the installers have easy access. The first step is to clear all of the items you can out of the area so the installers can move around easily. If there are any fixed items or things that you otherwise can't move, you should fully cover them with plastic. This ensures that they won't get damaged or ruined by overspray. You don't need to worry about covering the floors, as the installers will handle this before getting started.

The spray foam chemicals, air compressor, and all of the other equipment are brought to the house by truck. The installers then run the hoses from the truck to the work area. As such, you also need to make sure that there's a clear path from the driveway or front of the house to the attic, crawl space, or wherever else the insulation is being installed.

Safety Measures and Ventilation Protocols

When the spray foam chemicals are mixed, they produce a reaction that releases fumes into the air. While this might sound scary, the fumes are only produced during the application process and while the foam is drying and curing. As long as the installation is done by trained, certified professionals and the necessary precautions are taken, spray foam insulation is completely safe.

Before starting the insulation process, the installers will first open windows and set up fans to exhaust the fumes outside and avoid major air quality issues. During the installation and while the foam is curing, it's only safe to enter the building wearing full protective gear consisting of a suit, goggles to prevent the foam from getting on skin or in the eyes, and a ventilator to prevent the fumes from being inhaled. That means you'll need to vacate the premises and take your pets with you before the installation. You also won't be able to go back into the house for a minimum of 24 hours after the installation to allow the foam time to fully cure and the fumes to dissipate.

The timeline for a residential spray foam installation or a commercial spray foam installation depends on the size of the work area. Insulating an attic or a crawl space can usually be done in a single day. Larger projects, such as retrofitting a home or business with spray foam insulation during a renovation, can take longer. During the initial evaluation, we'll provide you with an estimated timeline so that you know approximately how long you'll have to vacate your property.

The Spray Foam Application: How It Works

The first steps in the application process are covering the floors, windows, and other surfaces that the foam shouldn't go on and preparing the substrate, which includes the walls, attic, or crawl space. Spray foam is a mixture of two chemicals that expand and adhere to the surface when mixed. The foam is applied using a pressurized gun with two hoses connected to it that supply the chemicals. As the foam expands and sticks to the surface, it fully fills the space and seals up any gaps to create an airtight barrier. If the proper precautions aren't taken by ensuring that the surface is clean, the foam may not adhere properly or may not fill in all of the gaps. That means the insulation won't provide nearly as effective a barrier against heat transfer as it should.

To achieve the proper results, spray foam must be applied in multiple thin layers. If it's applied too thickly, it won't cure properly and won't work nearly as effectively as it's meant to. After applying the first layer, the installer will then continue spraying additional layers until the entire void is filled. They'll then continue working around the space, filling each of the voids between the studs, floor joists, or roof trusses on the attic floor.

Curing Time and What to Expect Post-Spray

The curing time dictates how long it will be before the foam stops off-gassing fumes and you can safely go inside the house without wearing a ventilator. A thinner application of open-cell spray foam can fully cure in as little as eight hours, but you still shouldn't go into the house for at least 24 hours. For thicker applications necessary to fill larger voids or when using closed-cell spray foam, the curing time can be anywhere from 48 to 72 hours.

Spray foam is somewhat difficult to control, meaning there will almost always be some overspray or some areas where the foam expands out past the studs, joists, or trusses. Once the foam is fully cured, the installers will cut back all of the excess and clean up any overspray. Spray foam dust can also be harmful if breathed in. As such, we always make sure to fully clean the area to remove the dust. Once we've finished all of the cleanup, we'll take you through the area for a final inspection to show you the finished product and ensure that you're satisfied with the results.

After the foam is cured and everything is cleaned up, you're ready to install drywall or do whatever else you want to finish the space. If you're going to be working in the space yourself, you still want to make sure to wear a mask and goggles to avoid potentially breathing in the dust or getting it in your eyes.
